Tech Layoffs 2026: Shocking AI Job Cuts & Future of Work

2026 has seen a significant increase in layoffs across the tech industry, with companies like PayPal, Uber, and Oracle implementing job cuts as part of broader restructuring and efficiency drives. This trend is often linked to increased investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation.

PayPal’s Restructuring

PayPal has cut approximately 220 jobs in India, representing about 4% of its Indian workforce. These layoffs, affecting technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance teams in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, were reportedly carried out without prior notice via phone calls and are part of a multi-year plan to reduce its global workforce by 20%. With around 23,800 employees worldwide as of December 2025, this could impact over 4,700 roles globally. Layoffs have already occurred in India and the Asia-Pacific region, with other parts of the world to follow. In Ireland, around 164 employees, or 12% of the workforce, were also let go.

Uber’s Efficiency Drive

Uber is reducing its global workforce by approximately 3,300 jobs, about 10% of its employees, including around 200 roles in India. The company aims to simplify its structure by reducing management layers, bureaucracy, and speeding up decision-making. This move coincides with significant investments in AI and autonomous driving technology, indicating a shift in resources from human capital to technological advancements.

Oracle’s Workforce Reduction

Oracle is reportedly considering up to 10,000 job cuts globally, with thousands of Indian employees potentially affected. While a specific figure for India is unconfirmed, Oracle has already reduced its workforce significantly while increasing spending on cloud computing and AI. Earlier in the year, Oracle laid off up to 30,000 employees globally, and nearly 12,000 roles in India were impacted. The company’s annual disclosures show a decrease of about 21,000 employees in the last fiscal year, from approximately 162,000 to 141,000. Simultaneously, AI spending is rising, and teams are being tasked with cost reduction measures.

The AI Impact on Employment

The AI boom is driving both spending in technology and a reduction in human employment. Companies are investing billions in AI, leading to a realization that smarter machines can perform tasks previously done by humans, causing anxiety in departments like payroll. Beyond outright layoffs, Microsoft has placed around 500 employees in India on Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), which, while not always leading to termination, can serve as a precursor to exit in a restructuring environment.

Future of Work and Skill Development

Estimates suggest India’s technology and software services sector could lose between 25,000 and 35,000 jobs in 2026. Globally, layoff trackers indicate over 184,000 tech workers have been affected in 2026, with projections for total industry layoffs reaching around 274,000. Losing a job can significantly impact reemployment prospects, with a 2025 LinkedIn report showing 40% of involuntarily job-changing mid-career professionals accepting lower base salaries. This reduces negotiating power and can lead to a different career trajectory. The AI revolution is redefining the value of a worker. Success in the coming decade may depend less on hard work and more on collaboration with technology. Employees are urged to upskill and adapt rather than compete against machines that work tirelessly and without the need for traditional employee benefits. This presents both the promise and the challenge of the AI economy in India.
